Sleep, and why it is so important

It’s only since becoming a hypnotherapist that I’ve fully understood how important it is to get adequate sleep. Left to my own devices I’d work late into the night/early hours of the morning, get up at 6am, do a full day’s work and then wonder why, whenever I had down time, I’d sleeeeeep – any time, any place, anywhere. The first few days of holidays would be spent napping for hours and hours and hours…

It turns out I was suffering from sleep deficit. It also turns out that this is very common and a huge proportion of people don’t get enough sleep. Lack of sleep can affect judgement, mood, concentration, decision making, the list goes on. There’s even evidence to suggest that sleep deprivation was a contributory factor to major disasters such as Chernobyl and the Exxon Valdez.

This infographic neatly summarises the effects of lack of sleep. A meta-analysis of numerous studies on sleep has shown that we need at least 7 hours sleep, if not more.

My sleep deficit was self-inflicted, but as a hypnotherapist I see many people who have varying degrees of insomnia – not being able to get to sleep, waking up multiple times or waking early in the morning. I work with them using Solution Focused techniques, helping them to cope better and ultimately improving their sleep patterns.

Life is so much better after a good night's sleep.
